BIOGRAPHY

I am a contemporary visual artist, art gallery educator, arts accessibility consultant and emerging curator. I have a BFA in Studio Art from Concordia University (2001), a B.Ed from the University Of Ottawa (2005) and an MA in Critical Disability Studies from York University (2012) where I focused on disability art and contemporary curatorial practice. From 2006-2009 I was the Accessability Educator at the National Gallery of Canada and from 2010-2012 I was the Disability Arts Officer at the Canada Council for the Arts. I currently work as the Manager of Public Programs and ARTreach at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery. Originally from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, I live and work in Toronto.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I create abstract compositions by manipulating a medley of materials ranging from oil and watercolour painting, found objects, line drawings, textiles and most recently wool felt. I often assemble my materials by pinning, sewing or weaving, using needles and thread both as a tool and as a drawing implement.

My compositions tend to go off the page, often with elements playfully hanging off the bottom, poking out the top, or falling forward into space. I like manipulating objects, while exploring their potential in two and three dimensions. My work pokes at the line between collage and sculpture and between painting, drawing, and weaving. Through my work I hope to push the viewer to question the limitations of these categories, and challenge their own expectations of space, shape and form.
